Welcome to ICAN of Augusta. The International Cesarean Awareness Network, Inc. (ICAN), is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC.)

The latest cesarean rates are in and they are alarming.  Over 30% of mothers are having cesarean sections now in the US.  This means that about 1/3 of mothers will have major abdominal surgery that will affect them, their babies, their postpartum recoveries, and future pregnancies.  You may think that it won't happen to you...  But the odds are increasingly stacked against you.  If you would like to know more about cesarean prevention, VBAC, or are looking for resources regarding cesarean section, please join us at our next meeting.

New Meeting Location!

We will now be meeting at Earth Fare in Martinez on the 1st Wednesday of each month starting in February.  We will meet at 7pm in the private area of the cafe in the front of the store.

THANK YOU

A big thanks to all who came out to see "The Business of Being Born" in Augusta.  ICAN appreciates your support and we are all encouraged to see so many people show concern over the state of maternity care today in the U.S.

NEW CESAREAN RATES RELEASED

The CDC released the 2006 cesarean rates and the U.S. has hit an all-time high with 31.1% of all births ending in cesarean.  Georgia's rate for 2006 was 31.3% and South Carolina's rate was 32.9%.  You can view the detailed data here: 2006 CDC Birth Data
